Zoo with Friends

The first weekend in November we were able to hang out with my college roommate, Jenny, and her husband Dave. It was a great day and we really enjoyed being able to hang out together. We took them to the zoo (because Dave had never been to the Milwaukee Zoo) and then hung out, ate dinner and watched a movie. It was a really good day and I'm glad that we were able to spend some time with friends.

Apple Picking

Back at the beginning of October, we decided to go apple picking. We've done it the past few years and have really enjoyed it a lot. This year, we decided to invite family and friends to go along with us. It took a while to figure out a date but once that was decided we were good to go.

It was hot when we finally went, well, hot for October. It was in the mid-seventies with not a cloud in the sky. That's pretty warm for us. Since we'd had a warmer fall anyway, turns out that apple picking had been pretty popular. We ended up not picking the apples from a tree but selecting them from some barrels. Oh well, it was a fun time anyway.

August

I can't believe it's already August! That's so crazy to me.

Yesterday was another book club session. I have such a good time at book club, I'm so glad that I joined! I originally wasn't going to go because I was tired after work but decided to go anyway, and I'm so glad I did. We went to Beth's parent's condo on a lake and had fun swimming, tubing, and water skiing. It was a great time. After that we went to see Inception which was a GREAT movie. We talked as much about that movie in the parking lot as we did our book club selection for the month. It was great. I'm so glad that I found these girls and that Erik thinks it's important for me to have time to myself and really values the benefits that my friends provide me.

Overall, great day yesterday! I've got more to post (of course!) but I'm tired now. Gonna watch some Arrested Development before calling it a night!

Dave and Jenny Riley

On Saturday, my good friend and college roommate, Jenny, got married. She looked SO beautiful! I was able to see her right before the wedding and she was so excited! The service was great. I think Jenny cried during her vows which didn't surprise me at all. Sorry about the bad pictures, they were taken in haste, but you can get a glimpse of how great the day was for everyone.

Jenny and Dave leaving the church. Look how happy they are!
During their second "first" dance. The first time they went to dance, the fire alarm went off and we were supposed to leave. We found out that one of the workers had accidentally hit the fire alarm in the kitchen...ahh memories!
Jenny and I dancing the polka and clearly having a good time.
Look how happy and beautiful she is! Love it!
So the wedding marked the first time that I had actually met Dave, her husband. There had been a few opportunities over the years but they always fell through. So when we were polka-ing, he came up and she was telling him who I was and he said "I didn't think you actually existed, that you were just someone Jenny made up because I never met you". Which made me laugh SO hard because that's what I always said to Jenny about Dave. I think we'll get along just fine. =)

I am hoping now that the wedding stuff is over that we might actually have an opportunity to hang out with Jenny and Dave and bring Timmy along (he was at Paul and Katie's for the day). Both Dave and Erik are huge Star Wars fans so I think we'll all get along perfectly.

Birthday Party

We had a party to celebrate my golden birthday at the beginning of June. It was a great time and I'm so glad that everyone was able to come! I was SO disappointed that it started to rain about an hour before the party. However, it worked out that we moved the cars from the garage so everyone was able to stay mostly dry and still have a good time. It was a book club/family/friends party. I tried a new salad that went over really well and I was impressed and delighted by the amount of leftovers (pretty much just enough for lunches for me for the week). Woo! Very exciting! There aren't any pictures of me opening gifts and cards. I got a Nook from my parents and brothers (and sister-in-law) and then Barnes and Noble gift cards from some book club people...so the presents went nicely together! For those of you who don't know, a Nook is a e-book reader that can also do a few other functions. To learn more about Nook check out www.barnesandnoble.com

Here's my cake that I made and decorated myself. Not the prettiest, but it was tasty.

Chris's 30th Birthday Party

On March 6th we were able to be part of a surprise party for our friend Chris. His wife, Beth, started planning it back in January and he was completely surprised. Chris decided that he wanted a party for his birthday but that he wanted to do all the work for it. Meanwhile, Beth contacted everyone to have them say they were busy and couldn't make it when Chris asked about getting together. Chris actually invited people only the Wednesday before his birthday (so it ended up working out in Beth's favor anyway) and Dave and Buster's (an adult Chuck E Cheese I guess) that had only opened the day before. Clearly that wasn't going to work anyway.

Erik and I contacted Beth on Saturday to say that we were able to get a babysitter at the last minute (yeah...3 week last minute) and could join them for drinks. So we waited and met them outside Benno's in 'Stallis and went in with the birthday boy. He was COMPLETELY surprised! It was great!

Nate Update

Two weeks ago, Erik, Timmy, and I went over to Nate and Melissa's to take them dinner. This is something that my book club worked out a while ago. We knew that there would be help for an initial period of time but after a few weeks it would die off. That's when we (the book club) were going to start delivering dinners to them (home-cooked) every other day.

So on Saturday I heated up the stuffed shells and we headed on over. It was a pretty good time. I think they really enjoyed the company. Timmy was a little intimidated by their son, Sebastian, which was amusing because Timmy is 2 years older, but that's okay. I think he was taken aback by how in his face Sebastian was at the time. They were still fun to watch together.

Nate is doing about as well as can be expected. He is supposed to have another surgery in about a month or so because he has a hernia that can cause some trouble (not quite sure how that happened, but it's common enough). Other than that, he's doing well.

I'm glad that we were able to go hang out with them and provide a little bit of sanity in an otherwise crazy world.

Update

Some of you contacted Erik or I yesterday in regards to Nate and his surgery. First of all, even if you don't do anything else, knowing that you care enough about us to be interested in our friend is very touching.

From updates that Melissa did on her Facebook, I know that Nate's surgery went well. She was able to see him on Monday night but the doctors and nurses kept him sedated overnight so she didn't get to talk to him until yesterday. He appears to be doing well, he's in a lot of pain, but hopefully this will be the last of it.

When they originally said they were going up for the surgery they expected to be there through March 3rd. So, they'll be there at least the remainder of the week into next. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for our friend. I'll keep you updated as I know more. Thank you also for your fundraising ideas!

Prayers For Nate

A few months back I talked about our friend, Nate, and some of the troubles he's been having since he has Marfan Syndrome. I know I wrote about this before but just can't find it right now. There is some information from the National Marfan Foundation, some information from the American Heart Association and Wikipedia.

Today, Monday, February 22, Nate is again having surgery. He is having his aorta replaced and it will be a 12-15 hour surgery. It was originally supposed to be a week ago but the doctors wanted to make sure all the blood thinners were out of his system before operating.

Because of all of this, Nate and his wife Melissa (one of the members of my book club) have a lot of medical bills to pay, not to mention their regular bills as well. Melissa has written a great letter explaining everything:

February 13, 2010

Hello,

I don’t know who to address this letter to, but I’m writing to ask for help. I am asking for help because of my husband Nate’s medical condition and the struggle it has brought us. Let me tell you our story.

Seven years ago, Nate’s brother and I were attending the same college, and Nate, being tired of
Texas, decided to move up to Wisconsin to live with him. He didn’t know it at the time, but this was the first act of God in a series of events. We found each other, fell in love, and eventually moved to Minnesota so that I could attend chiropractic school. That’s where our lives changed forever.

In one of my classes, I learned about a rare, genetic disorder called
Marfan Syndrome. It is a gene mutation that causes the body’s connective tissue to be very weak. As a result, people with Marfan syndrome have a variety of symptoms, including tall, thin stature, very long limbs, bad eyesight, unexplained stretch marks, skeletal deformities, and cardiovascular problems. You may not know it by name, but it is Marfan syndrome that so often causes high school athletes to collapse and die unexpectedly.

Immediately my gut told me that Nate had this condition. I went back and forth on whether to discuss it with him, but it was the high risk of undetected aortic
aneurysms that just wouldn’t let me rest. I had to bring it up a few times, telling him that I was sure he was fine, but I really thought we should have his heart and aorta checked out, “just in case.” A few weeks later he finally agreed to the idea, and during the first week in April 2006, we drove an hour and a half to the Mayo Clinic to be checked out by the Marfan department. An hour of testing turned into a day, turned into an overnight trip. Words cannot describe what we felt when the doctor finally entered the exam room and told us that not only did Nate have Marfan syndrome, but he needed to have emergency open heart surgery to repair two aneurysms that were on the verge of dissection. The surgery was scheduled for a week later. We went home in disbelief to wait and prepare. On April
8th, a beautiful spring day, Nate surprised me with an engagement ring, and we celebrated one of the happiest days our of lives. Five days later, he underwent a 15-hour operation that involved cracking open his ribs and cutting out the affected aorta to replace it with synthetic material. He spent 10 days in the ICU and 3 grueling months at home recovering. I was 23-years-old, and he was only 29.

We know, and our friends and families know, that it was much more than just chance that brought us together. It was truly one of God’s miracles. To me, a young, first-year chiropractic student, the signs were so obvious. But dozens of experienced medical doctors had missed the diagnosis his whole life. Had it not been for our journey together that brought us to that exact place at that exact time, Nate’s aorta would have ruptured and by the time doctors would have been able to discover what was wrong, he likely would have died.

Life has not been easy for us since then. In November 2009, we discovered a new, third
aneurysm, and he has since undergone another surgery, 18 days in the ICU due to a near-fatal complication, and a trip to the Mayo clinic where he learned that on February 22nd, he will have another very complicated open heart surgery where the entire rest of his aorta will be cut out and replaced. He has since lost his job because of this, and it has been a strain on my career and our finances as well. We are borrowing money from family just to cover rent, forget about all the medical bills pouring in.

But the happy part of this story is our growing love for each other. Many young couples fail at marriage with only the normal stressors of daily life. Our marriage has prevailed and strengthened beyond belief. We always tell ourselves that we can get through anything, because we have already seen the “for worse” part of our vows. We were married in
October 2006, and on September 11, 2008, our son Sebastian Oliver was born. He is the joy of our lives, the happiest and funniest little boy you will ever meet. There is a 50/50 chance that Sebastian has Marfan syndrome as well. Our life together has not been easy, but neither of us would trade it for anything.

We have never asked for anything before. We have both worked very hard to always make ends meet, but we know when we are in over our heads, and this is one of those times. While my chiropractic practice is in its early stages and still growing, Nate is the main source of our income, yet he has not been able to work since November because of the instability of his aorta and all of the time he has spent in the hospital. We now have to pay our own health insurance, and if we fall behind for any reason, he can be dropped and not covered by anyone again for over a year because of his “pre-existing condition.” At this time we are lucky to have insurance at all, but the thousands of dollars of
out-of-pocket expenses we have are still far too much for us, since we don’t have enough for our living expenses as it is.

If it is at all possible for you to give from your heart and financially help us through this difficult time, we would be extremely appreciative. Rest assured that when we are on our feet again, we will pass the generosity on to others who are in need. We are already discussing getting involved with the
National Marfan Foundation to see how we can help.

Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to our story. In the meantime, we are staying strong with the faith that God has a plan for us, and it will all work out in time.

Sincerely,
Melissa Shera

Now that you know their story, I would like to ask for your help. I'm not asking you to donate to their bills (although that would be great!). What I am asking is for your ideas on fundraising events that we could do to help defer their medical bills. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.

Thought Process

On Friday I went to a Lia Sophia/Miche purse party. It was a lot of fun...and next time I'm probably going to buy something.

Anyway, on the way there I was telling my friend, Christine, about how Timmy has really moved on from just wanting to watch Thomas all the time. He now really loves The Lion King and Cars. While these are both fine movies, after about 100 times, they get to be a little much. We've learned that Timmy will watch pretty much any movie if it has an animal in it.

So, in telling Christine about Timmy and Cars, I mentioned that he doesn't call Lightning McQueen by his name. Timmy calls him Stickers. He does this because for a good portion of the movie he is called Stickers by another car and that's really the only name you hear him called. Interesting what little kids pick up on, huh?

Trainfest 2009

At the end of November, Trainfest 2009 came to the Expo Center at State Fair. We had talked about going for a while because Timmy loves Thomas (and really all trains) so much. Erik went with Timmy to get discount tickets at the hobby store near us and so we decided to go. It was a great time! Not that we didn't think we'd have a good time, I just don't think we knew what to expect. We saw people coming in with little step ladders and I just didn't get it, but now I know that if we go back, we'll take a little step stool for Timmy to climb up on and watch the trains (so smart!).

Here we are at the beginning of Trainfest 2009. We didn't tell Timmy that's where we were going (on the off chance that it wouldn't go over well). All we told him was that we had a surprise for him, which he loved!

This is the train set that Timmy and I are standing in front of in the above picture. I am just amazed by all the details!
Timmy watching a train go around a small track. He actually did a really great job of not trying to touch the trains as they went around.
When we first started taking pictures, I was a little nervous because some of the stuff was SO well done, I didn't know if people would be offended or annoyed at people taking pictures. I got over it though. This was the first thing I felt a little weird about taking a picture of. It's all done with laser cutting. It's truly amazing.
This is more of that same set. Clearly the guys aren't worried about people taking pictures. Erik was very impressed with this set. Everything here is laser cut so there's a tremendous amount of detail.
Watching some trains go by.
Erik rocking the 'stache. I personally didn't think it was a bad look at all (especially when he cleaned up the cheeks), but he didn't really like it. Oh well.
Watching another train go by. You'll notice his hands are very carefully placed at the edge of the table.
Getting a better view of things from Daddy's arms.
Watching for the train.
Watching the trains is very serious business.
Just before we saw the Thomas train we ran into my college friend Dorothy and her husband. I would love to say that we got introduced and had a great time. Unfortunately, that just didn't happen. Her husband writes for a miniature railroad magazine so he was truly in his element (and quite popular too!). That and when Erik had taken Timmy to the potty right before this, he didn't quite put the pull-up on right (we are working on the potty training hard core and use the pull-ups as a back-up when we are out places) and so I got a wet shirt. It was quite embarrassing for me because I couldn't put Timmy down, and I kinda wanted to leave. But Erik talked me into staying a little bit saying that people wouldn't really notice. Oh well. Accidents happen, right?
He's not looking at me because he sees a Thomas display over my shoulder. But you'll notice that he did bring Pablo with him. Yes, apparently Pablo also wanted to see Trainfest.
Watching more trains go by. This train was a diesel train. He really enjoyed being able to watch the trains at his own height.
Look! A Schlitz car!
This little train was amazing! It was in a box about the size of a jewelry box and could run and everything! Very impressive!
Where does Pablo go when Timmy doesn't want to carry him? In Daddy's back pocket. After the potty incident described above, I took Timmy to the potty to see what happened. While we were in there some little girl saw Pablo in Erik's back pocket (where he forgot he put him). Erik noticed the little girl looking at his back and then going to get her mom. He was nervous that he sat in something or something like that and then he heard the little girl say something to her mom and her mom reply "Yes, that is a Backyardigan". Needless to say, Erik was quite relieved they were talking about Pablo in his back pocket and nothing else!
This apparently was the longest display in the entire show. I think that had to do with scale more than anything. It did take up a lot of tables but it didn't seem like too many more than other displays. I learned a lot about the different size displays and models at the show.
One last attempt at a picture with Mommy. Fail.
