The Domes February 2010

When Jake and Amy came up to celebrate Christmas with us in February, we took the opportunity to head to the Domes. There was a Chinese New Year celebration going on which was fun to participate in as well. We mostly went for the train set up in the show dome. I tell you, this boy loves trains. :)

The Domes

I know that some of you are probably thinking that while it's great to know what I'm thankful for everyday, it'd be nice to know what we've actually been up to in the past few weeks. Right? I knew it!

A few weeks ago (right after Halloween to be exact), Timmy and I headed out to the Domes for a little bit of fun in the morning. On Mondays, the Domes are free until 12 for Milwaukee residents. Since I'm all about taking advantage of the free Mondays (because that's pretty much the only day that things are free in Milwaukee that I can take advantage of), we headed out. Timmy really enjoys the Domes, especially the third one that keeps changing themes.

Timmy enjoys looking up and seeing how high the dome actually goes.
He really liked the little pond in the middle of the exhibit. He was very tempted to go off the path and touch the water.
Here he is clearly showing just how awesome he thinks the water is by yelling "Wow!"
Here was another thing he was tempted by, the little roped off brick section behind the little exhibit house. Why does he only seem really enamored with things he shouldn't do?
The statues in this and the following picture were just a part of the exhibit, but I thought they looked pretty cool. Would you want these in your garden?
Taking a brief stop on his tour of the domes. This didn't happen often at all. This kid likes to move, move, move!
Stopping to smell the plants. He saw some older kids doing this and just had to figure out why they were doing it. This was the only picture I actually got of him doing it, even though he did it several times, he's quick!
Knocking on the door to see if the woman from the display would come open the plexiglass. I don't think it's going to happen...
He's just so pleased with himself. I love it!
This was the display inside the house (for Halloween). It's a gypsy with her tarot cards, magic ball, and violin. Hmm...not quite sure about that stereotyping.
This is Timmy telling me to put away the "pictures" and just have fun. He kept saying it too. "Come on, Mommy, come on. Put away the pictures."
In the Desert Dome. This dome is actually the coolest (temperature wise) of all the domes. Here Timmy is looking at just how tall the catcus truly is.
By one of the last remnants of Halloween. I thought this was nice, especially because we didn't carve pumpkins this year and Bud took it upon himself to partially eat the pumpkin Timmy had gotten from his field trip. Oh well.
Since we didn't spend a huge amount of time at the Domes, I decided that since it was still nice out, that we could head on over to the zoo. So here we go...to the next post!

The Domes

Last week I decided to try something different with Timmy.  I decided to take him to the Domes, instead of down to the museum.  The Domes are also free on Monday, so it seemed like a decent idea to see if he liked it at all.  Yeah, I didn't need to worry about if he liked it, so much as getting him to leave.  Funny how that works out sometimes.  =)

The Domes, or the Mitchell Park Conservatory as it is actually titled, consists of 3 separate domes that house different plants and sometimes birds as well.  There is the Desert Dome, the Tropical Dome, and the Special Exhibit Dome.  The Special Exhibit Dome is exactly like it sounds, it changes throughout the year and showcases different plants and special exhibits.

Timmy really enjoyed the Tropical Dome and probably would have been content to stay there the entire time.  Of course the Tropical Dome had:
A nice smiling face shot of my little boy!
A pretty orchid (I think...)
Why so serious, Timmy?  Aren't you having a good time?
Walking in the Desert Dome, which was remarkably cooler than the Tropical Dome.  It's the humidity, I know.
