On Monday it was the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall coming down and the beginning of the city of Berlin to be unified once more. Do you remember where you were? I remember we talked about it in my class a little bit (I'll just leave off which class so that nobody feels old). It's interesting to note that I was born during the Cold War yet this is something we will need to teach Timmy about. Erik and I actually discussed that last year when The Hunt for Red October was on TV. Timmy will have to be told and taught about why a missing Russian nuclear sub was of such importance in that movie and time period (not that it wouldn't be interesting or of note now either). Here's an interview from The Story. Here's an article from NPR. The Soviet Union actually existed for a few more years until it's collapse in 1991, which was the actual end of the Cold War.
Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street. I loved this show when I was younger and I enjoy it now as a parent. What's more important is that Timmy loves it and learns from it. Congratulations Sesame Street for teaching so many generations how to count and the letters of the alphabet along with important ideas like sharing. Here's an interview with the man who plays Big Bird. Here's an article about Sesame Street.
This week also marks the 15th anniversary of Kurt Cobain killing himself. Whether you like Nirvana or not, they were the beginning of a new era in music. I don't think that you could get away with wearing all that plaid and flannel now...but I could be wrong.
Just a few of the important events being talked about this week. If you have a thought or opinion about one of them, please feel free to leave a comment or write to me on Facebook.
